Vitrigraph Class at Ditore Glass Works!

9865 Mesa Rim Road, Unit 211, San Diego, CA 92121

Saturday, May 24, 2008, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

$150 per student; 12 student maximum

Larr Cunningham and Leigh Adams have been teaching vitrigraph in a variety of venues around the Southland for a number of years.  They demonstrate all aspects of vitrigraph starting with pulling simple stringers and wiggly lines to tooling exquisite leaves, feathers, twirls and more.  Special attention is paid to each student to assure that they learn both pulling glass and gaffing for another person.  Safety and comfort are emphasized at all times.  We will discuss preparing the glass, loading the crucible, color choices and color sequences. The COE of the glass used is 90.  Students are requested to wear all cotton clothing, long pants, a long sleeved shirt (may be worn just when pulling) and closed toed shoes.  Long hair should be securely tied back.  This is a hot glass party!  Consider bringing a pizza box to take your lovely new glass home in!

Please bring a lunch.  Eye protection will be provided, but you may bring your own.

COLD FINISHING with JOHNATHON SCHMUCK!

Coming September, 2008.

"A piece of glass is not really done until it has been ‘finished’ with some
coldworking. From cleaning up an edge or a lip, to fully altering the outer
surface of the glass, there are many different ways to coldwork a piece."

In this class we will be exploring the most rewarding aspects of coldworking
and finishing,.   Emphasis here will be on learning how to use a machine
with comfort, confidence, and competence so that the grinding process
proceeds with ease.  We will look at techniques which allow  one to achieve
some very satisfying and professional finishes in a very efficient
manner

We will be taking very raw glass pieces down to an exquisite smooth matte
finish with the Merker lathe, the belt sander, the angle grinder, the
sandblaster, hand lapping, the hand engraver, and in the kiln with  fire
polishing.   We will be discussing strategies and options that can make
coldworking fun and painless, what it takes to set up one’s own  coldshop,
and all the aspects of safety to indeed make coldworking free of any
pain.
